OBJECTIVE:

The objective of this phase is to prioritise one new funding tool to be pilot tested.

WHO:

The prioritisation phase can be championed by one person in the organisation, but must be participatory in nature and include substantial input and buy-in from board members and senior staff. Depending on the capacity of the organisation, it may be useful to contract specialist expertise to facilitate the prioritsation phase.

DURATION:

Expect that the prioritisation phase will take 1-3 months. The size of the organisation, the complexitiy of partnerships, services, and existing revenue streams, and the extent of previous strategic planning will affect the time frame.

OUTPUT:

Prioritised list of funding tools (and associated investors) that is specific to your organisation.

Step 3.1 Prioritisation Criteria

Prioritisation criteria will vary by organisational context and needs but your organisation should develop a set of criteria that consider at least the following:

* Financial Return on Investment (i.e., how much time will it take to develop, secure, and manage this funding tool versus the realistic estimate of revenue?)

* Ecological and/or Social Return on Investment

* Current or possible future organisational capacity (including time and fit of skills and expertise)

* Access to investors through networks, relationships, partners

* Leveraging of existing assets, partnerships, resources

* Alignment with organisational mission (and possibly brand) versus risk to organisational reputation
